Basically, I think your attitude and your aptitude both are very important, they work togehter in determining our altitude.
I have seen that many people whose attitudes are very positive haven‘t reached very high altitude, that shows one‘s aptitude may play a much more important role in one‘s life.
But for those whose abilties are not extraordinary, the vital factor may be their attitudes.
The real test of good manners is to be able to put up with bad manners pleasantly.

As the saying goes, the best choice for most of us is just an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.
If you always put up with bad manners pleasantly, then it would be harmful for those who behave in bad manners.
