Grammar

Possibilities

Realistic Possibilities

You can use the first conditional to express a realistic possibility.

Use if + present tense in the conditina clause, and a modal like will or can in the result clause.

If you do the course, you will need to put in extra hours.

If you want to learn more about design, you can work with the design team.

The clauses can be swapped around. When this happens,no comma is necessary.

You can work with the design team if you want to learn more about design.

You can replace the modal verb(like will or can) with verbs like plan to,intend to,would like to and want to.

If I have time,I plan to learn how to code software.

Less realistic possibilities

Use the second conditional to talk about something that seems less likely.Use if + past tense in the condition clause, and a verb like would, could or might in the result clause.

If you did a course in design, you‘d need to put in extra hours.

Notice again that the two clauses can be swapped around.

I would travel more if i worked less.

Use were, not was,in the condition clause.

If I were you,I‘d learn how to write a project plan.

Unspoken if

In spoken English,it‘s common to leave the if clause of the sentence unspoken. The text in parenttheses in these examples contains the unspoken if clause.

Can you delever more traning?

Hmm.(if I agree to deliver the presentation,)I‘ll have to delay the other project.
